I'm excited to share the news that my article, "Atmospheric Visions: mirages, methane seeps and 'clam-monsters' in the Yellow Sea," has been published in the island studies centric journal Shima. This article brings together ancient Chinese mythology about the origin of mirages and contemporary issues around deep sea mining and ecology. In both cases, theories about atmospheres play a significant part in making sense of distant futures on the horizon. The project takes inspiration from Donna Haraway's Chthulucene and Philip Hayward's 'aquapelagic imaginary' and along the way traces unexpected multispecies relationships in literature, pop culture and folklore about the sea.
The article should also be helpful to those who may be interested in understanding more abou the thinking behind the "Sea City Clam Tower" exhibition.
