“I’m going to go to the middle of the day”

- a painting exhibition by
Benjamin Kidder Hodges

When auto-translation algorithms on social media are unable to properly identify the meaning of a text in Chinese the default placeholder line, ‘I’m going to go to the middle of the day’ is added.

In this exhibition, Hodges uses this otherwise meaningless phrase like a mantra expressing the desire to escape situations, genres and tropes. He depicts scenes and figures haunted by imagined threats and ambient insecurities.

Informed by gothic fiction, Hodges invites viewers to consider landscapes transformed by human intervention. He asks what new anxieties and worries might emerge from the changing environments that surround us.

Hodges’ characters find themselves in unclear situations, trying to make sense of the world around them, trying to escape or just make it to ‘the middle of the day.’
